Political update from our Country Director (PC...
The definitive list of candidates who meet the required eligibility conditions was issued by the Special Electoral Court (CES) on Friday at 12:15p.m. Surprisingly, the name of de facto President Andry Rajoelina is on the list of approved candidates. The Candidacies of former First Lady Lalao Ravalomanana, former President Didier Ratsiraka, and former Prime Minister Camille Vital were also approved...

My Letter for the P.C. Mada "Welcome Book" (First...
Being a lesbian has neither helped nor hindered my Peace Corps experience here in Madagascar primarily because I don’t talk about it with people in my village. Homosexuality, although visible here, is not discussed and is heavily ‘taboo’, so I choose not to divulge my sexuality to my village in order to make my life easier and to respect their culture. However, I have chosen to...

Working with the LGBT initiative...
Here in Madagascar. Not much to report on yet, but the “safe zone” is up and active here in PC Mada, and my first course of action involves writing a letter in the welcome book on my experience as a lesbian in PC Mada. Really excited for this! I will keep ya’ll updated as things progress!

Peace Corps can be a really lonely job.
kmbrentano asked: Hi! I just got accepted for PC Madagascar, I'll be shipping out in July. I was wondering if you had any packing tips (specifically technology related, ie bring a laptop or not, film v. digital camera, etc.) or advice in general? Thanks!

It's been awhile...
So it’s been a very long time since I wrote an anecdotal entry on this thing, I was thinking, since I have time an all, I’d do it today. It would be impossible for me to recap everything I’ve done, every experience I’ve had, and everything I’ve learned, so I won’t even try. However, I can hit up some highlights: Places I’ve gone on the island since last...

Hi! How are you? I’m julia, I just got invited to serve in the pc in Madagascar too in March! I accepted my invitation, and now I found your blog and was wondering if I could ask you about your experience? I’m trying to pack now, and mostly was just wondering if you have any suggestions for charging mac products over there? Also, how do you find the sleeping arrangements..? Did you...

“Oh My Gosh… I have been sh*ting my brains out since I got here…do you think I have dysentery?” “Maybe, but I haven’t pooped in like a week… I should stop eating rice 3 times a day…I’m getting fat anyways… I wish I had dysentery…then I’d be skinny. “Yeah….or you could get those worms that u can feel crawling...

ITS MY BIRTHDAY!!!!
Welp, I’m now 23 (or as I tell everyone in this country 26). So far, my birthday has been pretty great. I went to Fianar and had a ballin’ cup of coffee at the Claire De Lune which is a little bakery down the road from the meva (Peace Corps House), got a WONDERFUL birthday song sung to me by my sipa (boy/girlfriend in Malagasy), and now I’m at Tea and Talk which is the university...
