Hello All!
My name is Liz Velez, and I hail from the wonderful state of Pennsylvania. I recently graduated with a degree in English Secondary ed. from Point Park University, and I have been in the application process to become a PCV (Peace Corps Volunteer) since August 2011. After a long, really intense process, I have finally received my official invitation. I have been asked to go to Madagascar!! I was supposed to depart in Sept. or Oct, but my departure date has been moved up to July 9th. I’m very excited for the cultural experience and to be able to help where I am arguably most needed, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous. Madagascar is the 10th poorest country in the world which I have come to terms with, but it’s the unstable means of communication with those back home that is making me a little apprehensive. I’m sure once I get integrated this won’t be too much of a problem because I will have people to interact with, but until then, I know I will get a little lonely. I’m so excited though!!! This has been my dream since I was a freshman in college, and it has been the motivation that has influenced a lot of my decisions since then.
I will try to keep this blog updated as often as possible, but like I said, there will be limited means of communication. There is very limited internet access. From what I hear, the Peace Corps camp has internet access that is somewhat unreliable, and in some of the major cities, there is some unreliable internet access as well. Also, cell phone service is really sporadic, and it is usually only found close to the bigger cities. Mail, which occasionally gets lost, takes 4 - 6 weeks. Anyways, all of this makes blogging a little more difficult, but like I said, I will try to keep this updated for all of those who are curious back home. I’ll blog again before departure! Hopefully I see you all before then!
Much Love,
Sliz
